Sam Clayton Shares Tips for a Healthy Lifestyle

Samantha Clayton, Herbalife’s Senior Director of Fitness Education and one of the world’s fittest mothers, and Chappy Callanta, Herbalife’s Fitness Coach, have shared during the recent Herbalife Asia Pacific Extravaganza 2015 some practical tips to overcome common issues of busy schedules and procrastination in order to kick start a healthy, active lifestyle.

• Get over your fear of exercise – Many people associate exercise with many negative things like sweating, exhaustion and muscle pain. The best approach is to start slow. By following a progressive approach to getting active, most will start to associate fitness with improved body composition, body confidence and feeling great.
• Make it fun – When you decide that you want to start leading an active lifestyle, make sure that you choose activities that you find fun. Inviting your friends or loved ones to join the activities can make working out fun and help motivate you. This will keep you coming back for more.
• Make it a habit - The amount of exercise each person needs varies but as a general guideline, in order for you to reap the simple health benefits associated with physical activity, you should aim to be active for at least 30 minutes on five days of each week.
• Choose the right nutrition - Nutrition also plays a critical role leading an active lifestyle. There is a true connection between the nutrition you consume, your activity level and your overall health. A good balance would be 80% nutrition and 20% exercise.
• Find a class or program - Sometimes it’s easier to stay consistent and on track when you have a structure – this can mean joining a class or group activity. At Herbalife, we have created the active Body Fit workout program – a series of exercise videos that provide repetition, gradual progression and periods of rest. You can visit these videos anytime online at http://www.herbalife24.com/active.

Whether you have five, or ten minutes, Samantha and Chappy advocate that you can kick start a healthy active lifestyle easily, with just small and simple changes to your daily lifestyle routine. Samantha and Chappy also demonstrated the following exercises, which you can complete in five or ten minutes, to keep your muscles active and in shape with little space:

• Plank Walk Out: Take it down to the floor with a plank walk out – hinge at the hips then bend forward and walk out into plank and simply walk back up. Get down again, holding in plank – loosen off holding one knee to the elbows. Lift to the other side and come back up.
• Opposite Leg Lifts: Come down onto the floor on all fours and make sure your shoulders are directly over your wrists, and your knees are directly under the hips. You want a nice flat back and all you are going to do is simply lift one leg and lift one arm up.
• Tricep Dip: Place your feet shoulder distance apart – heels on the floor, hands behind. Lift your booty up off the floor and do a simple tricep dip by pushing the arms back. You can also do tricep dips on a workout bench, but if you are out and about, this is a great one to do because you don’t need any equipment.

[Race Result] 39th Milo Marathon Manila

Veteran runners Eric Panique and Luisa Raterta made headlines as they grabbed the top spots in the 42K centerpiece event at the 39th National MILO Marathon Manila qualifying leg on Sunday. Almost 35,000 runners of all ages answered the challenge and enjoyed the great sunny weather as they conquered the MILO Marathon race routes.

In the men’s division, Panique outpaced his rivals, beating them with a time of 02:37:44. Mario Maglinao (02:39:47) followed in second place, while Rene Desuyo (02:45:57) finished in third place.

Panique trained with 5-time MILO Marathon King Eduardo Buenavista in Baguio City to prepare for the race. Despite stiff competition from his fellow elite runners early on in the race, he persevered to move forward. “There were some runners ahead of me at the start,” shared Panique. “I increased my pace in the last six kilometers and thankfully, I was able to beat them. I am very grateful to the Lord for his guidance in helping me achieve this honor.”

In the distaff side, Luisa Raterta rose above her counterparts and topped the race with a time of 03:10:36. Rounding up the top 3 female 42K runners are Criselyn Jaro (03:25:03) in second place, and April Rose Diaz (03:34:02) in third place.

Whenever Raterte takes a break from her own personal training, she coaches aspiring runners and athletes on the street in Sta. Rosa, Laguna, to turn them away from bad vices. She revealed that she also trains her daughter. 13-year-old Leonalyn Raterta, a champion in her own right, won third place in the 5K category. “Leonalyn just finished competing in the Palarong Pambansa, and now, she won in the MILO Marathon,” shared Luisa. “She’s very dedicated to running. I always enjoy training with her and as her mother, I couldn’t be any prouder. “

The country’s biggest and most prestigious event was also graced by celebrities who are MILO Marathon regulars, including The Biggest Loser Pinoy Edition coach and MILO APEX founder Jim Saret and Toni Saret, MILO R2 ambassador and football star Tata Garcia-Longfitness enthusiast and triathlete Kuya Kim Atienza, and avid runner Karylle Tatlonghari-Yuzon. “The race route was so beautiful because you could see the Manila Bay sunrise. The runners from the MILO community are also very friendly,” shared Karylle. “There was a group of students who stayed with me towards the end of the race. I was already a bit tired, but they waited for me to catch up and encouraged me to go on. The energy and support from everyone is the best.”

The National MILO Marathon is not only a breeding ground for local talents but also a program that empowers children nationwide. With the support of the Department of Education and the National MILO Marathon runners, MILO’s Help Gives Shoes advocacy will provide 10,000 underprivileged youth with brand new running shoes this year. MILO is working with DepEd in the selection of deserving public school student beneficiaries.

The race will resume in Calapan (August 2), before heading to Lipa (August 9), Naga (August 16), Lucena (August 30), Iloilo (September 20), Bacolod (September 27), Tagbilaran (October 4), Cebu (October 11), General Santos (October 18), Davao (November 8), Butuan (November 15), and Cagayan De Oro (November 22). The National Finals will be held on December 6 in Angeles, Pampanga.

[Healthy Foodie Guide] The Spice Lab PH

I have started actively running and blogging again this year. There is cadence now.  It is good to be back.  This is a pure act of reconciliation for all the unhealthy choices I made when I was not consistent in any sport or fitness routine, while taking in a lot of processed food for almost two years. This time around, I also made a deliberate decision to go for organic or natural products, one product at a time.  This includes food, as in, eating real food.

Speaking of real food, spice brings out every thing nice from most home-cooked meals.  I reintroduced natural herbs and spices into our meals at home.  Recently, word got around in the office that a friend of a friend has opened a spice gourmet shop - and the products are really good.  Talk about a healthy product line up that is a must-try for foodies - THE SPICE LAB PH.

Here is what the folks behind The Spice Lab PH have to say about their company and products.  I have to put it all here with a strong backing of satisfied foodies in the office and the rest of the world wide web, myself included.

We came from a family of foodies who love trying out different cuisines. There are 3 of us in the biz. We came from totally different prodessional fields, which we think helps in adding more perspective in our way of running the business.

We also love anything SPICY.  XO Sauces (which we adore) are a bit pricey in the market. So one day, we decided to try cooking it on our own. It came out even better than the ones we’ve tried in restos. Maybe it’s because our ingredients are fresher. We didn't use any preservatives. Since then, we’ve had our own homemade XO sauces, which we’ve shared as gifts with family and some friends.

Just last April, we’ve decided to share it with more people by putting it out in the market. To avoid the steep price, we put some variety into our sauces.  We wanted our products to be part of every meal without having to worry about the budget. We wanted newbies in the kitchen feel like experts. We wanted foodies like us to be able to enjoy all their home cooked meals. We wanted to prove that healthy can also be yummy. We wanted every meal, even the simplest ones, taste like a thousand bucks.

This is why we sell The Spice Lab products. We’re in constant search for new flavors and products to share with everyone.

[Update] Baby Groovee: To sell or not to sell?

When it boils down to giving up one in order to make room for another.

Should I say goodbye to you?

I'm reposting this article, first posted, August 2014.  After almost a year, I am ready to let go of this beautifully-crafted eye candy.  It took me a long time to decide.  For its sentimental value, I'm more inclined to hand it over to a friend, who I know will take good care of this baby.   I bought this bag as a reward for myself, after completing a complex module of a project back in 2011.
