The MILO® Marathon is the longest-running and most-attended marathon in the Philippines. Since its inception in 1974, more and more people have joined, making it MILO®'s biggest and grandest sports event. Every year, more and more participants run different distances, supporting MILO®'s mission to build a nation of champions!
"Help Give Shoes" was launched in 2010. For every runner of the hundreds of thousands who signed up, a portion of the registration fee went to providing shoes for underprivileged children. MILO® matched the amount collected and as a result, 4,200 children received new pairs of shoes. Every year since then, the number of race participants and the corresponding number of shoes given out have increased, with 34,200 total pairs of shoes given out as of 2013.

As the year crosses its halfway mark, Unilab Active Health (ULAH) is blazing the trail anew towards empowering progressive athletes to exceed their limits and perform better as preparations for theRun United Philippine Marathon (RUPM)—the third leg of this year’s Run United Series—get underway.
Aiming to bring the pursuit sports excellence of every progressive Filipino runner to the next level, ULAH has developed a holistic, system integrated approach to help the progressive athletes go beyond their limits, taking inspiration from four (4) key pillars: events, training, nutrition, and gear.
For RUPM 2015, ULAH will be hosting a three-day race kit claiming expo at One Esplanade in Mall of Asia from October 1 to 3, three days before the actual race day. During the event, RUPM racers will enjoy a host of exclusive perks, freebies, and discounts from participating exhibitors, as well as racing tips and advices from coaches and sports science experts.
It has been a known practice for ULAH to enhance the runners’ race experience in every Run United series since dominating the running scene four years ago. From having an exclusive lane in 2012, a tunnel finish in 2013, and a red carpet finish last year, this year’s RUPM leg will feature a start and finish area at One Esplanade, where finishers of the 42-kilometer category can savor their victory by concluding their race on a red carpet lane.
Adding to the excitement for the upcoming test of skill and endurance will be the RUPM Mentorship Kit, a level up of what ULAH gave RU2 participants. This specialized training kit will include a customized Exceed Yourself Training Plan, a comprehensive training plan created by Coach Ani de Leon-Brown—the fastest Filipina Ironman, and member and coach of Team Unilab Active Health—now integrated with a nutrition that’s designed to help runners achieve target finish more efficiently.
“This guide is a step-by-step, day-to-day progressive activity plan that will guarantee the progressive athletes a stronger finish time, provided that they religiously follow every aspect of the entire module,” says Alex Panlilio, ULAH Head and Operating Vice President. “Using the concepts from this training plan, you’ll know when to push harder, take a long run, work on cross-training, or load on a power run, as well as understand the significance of relaxation and proper recovery techniques.”
Aside from this, RUPM participants will also have the chance to don their own personalized race bib during the race, a treat that serves as a runner’s swag during the race and a valuable badge of honor post-race. Also included together with the bib in the RUPM mentorship kit meant to be taken daily: a pack of three capsules of Enervon Activ to help build stamina and keep them training and performing at an optimal level, a pack of the new Active Health Carbgel for energy that lasts during workout, and an individual sachet of Enervon HP Recovery Drink for use after a training session for faster recovery, helping athletes bounce back before laspag attacks. This is ULAH’s complete sports nutrition system that can help the progressive athlete achieve his personal best.
“At the end of the day, our goal is to help our participants become a better version of themselves, all while having fun. This personalized badge will be something to remind them of their feat of exceeding their limits and breaking boundaries,” notes Panlilio.
An evolution of mentoring
Another prominent innovation to the upcoming RUPM will be the addition of pacers during the race day to ensure that every progressive athlete’s quest to exceed their limits will be challenging yet enjoyable.
The ULAH website (www.unilabactivehealth.com) has also transformed from being an events-based information platform to becoming a tool that progressive athletes can use to become better, more competitive athletes. “We are dedicated to understanding the needs of the progressive athlete and together, we strive to act as mentors in helping them become better versions of themselves,” Panlilio explains.
“We are very excited to be a part of Run United Philippine Marathon says Jan Catherine Sy, Director of Business Development for One Esplanade. With new innovations, this year is sure to bring out the best in the athletes, inspiring each to reach their goal.”
Online registration for RUPM 2015, slated on October 4, 2015, will be opening at a much earlier date to ensure that participants get their preferred singlet and finisher’s shirt sizes (register before August 15, 2015 to get a guaranteed singlet and finishers’ shirt size). Priority online registration will start by June 12 for registered 21km finishers from both RU1 and RU2 and will then be open to the public, both online and in-store (selected Toby’s and Runnr outlets), beginning June 19.
New Active Health apparel collection will also be available during the three-day race expo, happening from October 1-3 also at One Esplanade.
Mark your calendar for one of Manila's premier marathon events, Run United Philippine Marathon, 4th October 2015.
For the more progressive runner-patrons of the Run United series, completing the highest categories in RU1 (March 2015) and RU2 (June 2015) events gradually built their confidence to conquer a full marathon distance of 42KM on the 4th of October. Just imagine this photo of the finish line coming to life, a stage set to confirm your status a a full-pledged marathoner. Rockstar level.

Race Category, Registration Fee, and Race Kit Inclusion
April 2015 - I felt like running and I were back together again. It's true love, indeed. After two failed artificial inseminations, a surgical operation, and unwanted pounds, I started brisk walking several times for about three weeks.
May 2015 - I was training 3x a week already, and maintaining a 5.5km for 40 minutes per run, as what work schedule typically allowed. I gradually introduced a once-a-week long slow distance (LSD) run. I was running 40 min 2x a week, and 1.5 hours 1x a week.
What began as an abrupt, sharp pain in my hip and lower back became a mainstay for three weeks. I had nagging thoughts that it could be due to my current fitness level - muscle weakness, weight gain, and postural issue while driving in heavy traffic and office work. It is not yet enough for a conservative training to half mary. I also threw some muscle strengthening routine to my training, and a recovery drink. The pain won't go away. It could be the start of the iliotibial band syndrome (ITBS), and I was worried about its impact to my knees. I have a history of bursitis (fluid in the knee), which I got from overtraining in badminton. My right knee was then treated by a chiropractor.
10km is my new long slow distance (LSD) run. Smile, though my hip and lower back were aching. At the RU2 event with BFD, photo by Letsky Runner.
After the Run United event last week, I decided to consult a chiropractor, Dr Wolf. He is one of the resident chiropractors at Intercare Clinic in Makati.

Diagnosis: ITBS (Yes, I was in denial for so long).
Grabbed from http://www.mendmyhip.com/
Diagnostic approach and initial therapy:
1. Patient fills up form, chief complaint (CC), pain intensity/frequency/duration.
2. Patient is assisted to a therapy room, requested to wear a hospital gown. Chiropractor interviews the patient, completes patient's posture/spine profile, and details about CC. (Dr. Wolf also took note of my activities as a recreational runner and badminton player).
3. In my case - a physical therapist wrapped me in a warm blanket for 15 minutes, and then she massaged my back and hips to get rid of nodules (stuck lactic acid in the muscles; lamig in Tagalog). There was a difference in response between the left and right regions of my back. Dr. Wolf began to do alignment by applying pressure on certain muscle groups. My tendons were cracking like firecrackers (tendons are what hold muscles and bones together).
Cause: Weak abductor muscles (pelvic region); there is a misalignment in the pelvic-thigh region, and the right hip and leg are starting to exert more effort to compensate for the pain in the left side.
To me, it means LACK OF BADMINTON. I used to play badminton as part of my cross training for full marathons. I never had an ITBS issue back in the day. The side-to-side (lateral) movement is a good exercise to strengthen the hip abductors (gluteus maximus and minimus, tensor fascia - muscles that hold the hips together).
My first corporate badminton championship game. Even bursitis cannot stop me. I used to play like there was no tomorrow.
Rehabilitation: Weeks of chiropractic + physical therapy + myotherapy sessions; at least, two sessions in a week.
Good things:
1. ITBS is highly curable. Therapy is almost always effective.
2. My ITBS has not yet affected my left knee.
3. I can still do brisk walking with minimal discomfort, bike, and swim.
4. Chiropractic session (Chiropractor aligns bones, muscles, tendons - imagine all the cracking! I'm a crack addict)
5. Myotherapy and physical therapy to rehabilitate my muscles and tendons (tendons hold our muscle together)
6. I have an 'almost balanced posture'. My shoulders and back require minimal alignment. 7. I do not have to take any pain reliever or anti-inflammatory drug.
Bad things:
1. No running in the meantime. 2. I cannot run long distance yet - wait, wait, wait some more.
3. Forget about the half marathon race (21km) at the Manila Milo Marathon (July 26, 2015).
4. Canyon or Revel full marathon (42km) in California, Nov 2015 seems far fetched.
I will continue to rehabilitate my sore and inflamed muscles. I am looking forward to the day when I can chronicle my first serious training for a half mary and full marathon in three years. Enter soundtrack by Coldplay (music video grabbed from Coldplay Official Channel YouTube). ITBS does not rock, Coldplay does! \m/
